Colder times are usually a relief for some hyperhidrosians. It’s usually easier to regulate the warmth and sweating with layered outfits. It’s a huge difference if you think about the summer heat. However, the fight against excessive sweating remains present.

Autumn and winter are an exciting season for members of hyperhidrosis society. Many possibilities open during this period, especially in November, hyperhidrosis awareness month.

Big steps forward in the fight against excessive sweating are happening daily. You can check all the latest news on the hyperhidrosis society website.

One of our main missions at Hidroxa is to make our customers feel safe and comfortable.

best iontophoresis machine

Many people wonder if iontophoresis treatments are going to work for them. For those who can not access the clinic to test the machine, we offer a 50-day money-back guarantee. Besides, our customer support is always available for guidance, tips, and advice on best practices.

We are planning to expand our collaboration with more clinics in Scandinavia to start with. We aim for future cooperation with clinics across Europe and worldwide as well. Hopefully, more patients will be able to try out the iontophoresis device before deciding whether they want to purchase it. Now, back to the trips and tricks for dealing with sweat in the winter.

Tips for dealing with excessive sweating in the winter

 1. Choose your clothing wisely
 2. Avoid foods that contribute to body odor
 3. Consider changes to your medical treatments
 4. Talk to your doctor

Choose your clothing wisely

hyperhidrosis in winter

Your outfit choices can be both your friend and enemy when it comes to handling the sweat in colder times. Particularly when you’re switching a lot between indoors and outdoors.

Some colors and materials could help your skin breathe and hide that you’re sweating.

Others may play against your favor, even if you’re not sweating that much.

Some people with severe hyperhidrosis buy several shirts of the same kind to be able to switch their clothing multiple times during one day without anyone noticing.

Which colors to wear if you’re sweating excessively?

White is one of the few light colors that won’t show your sweat stains as much. However, if the color of the clothing is too bright like yellow, light blue and green, pink, etc. it will become harder to hide the stains.

excessive sweating shirt color

If your stains aren’t transparent, bright colors like blue, white, green, pink, red, olive, and especially gray are the worst choice.

When it comes to dark colors black, navy, dark brown are one of the best options to hide sweat.

Consider wearing patterns

Patterns like camouflage, floral, checkered, paisley, plaid, and snake print can help you to become a master of disguise. They might not help you sweat less, but they can help you feel less nervous because they won’t show the fact that you’re sweating.

hyperhidrosis clothing

Fabrics that are good choice if you’re sweating

Moisture wicking fabrics:

 • Merino Wool
 • Bamboo
 • Wool

These fabrics “pull sweat away from your body” and are also natural fabrics. They won’t produce as much as unpleasant smells like the artificial ones if you’re suffering from Bromhidrosis as well.

Breathable fabrics:

 • Cotton
 • Linen
 • Rayon

These fabrics are great if you want to let your skin “breathe”. Any possible body odor (bugging people that suffer from both hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis) will evaporate much faster.

Most of people with hyperhidrosis usually don’t have a problem with odor. In some cases, it can be a possible issue if sweat isn’t coming from the feet.

Foul smelling sweat is a condition named Bromhidrosis.

Fabrics that contribute to smell and odor production and might be good to avoid:

 • Polypropylene
 • Nylon
 • Polyester

Wear layers

The weather is the most unpredictable in this season. Wearing layers is an effective strategy to stay comfortable in the winter. Frequent changes in temperature are harder to handle if you haven’t chosen your layers wisely. Here are the tips for clothing layers to help in the fight against sweating above normal:

 • Wear an undershirt and undergarments under your outfit. They can often absorb a certain amount of sweat, so the amount of sweat on the surface will lessen.
 • Consider bringing a jacket with you. When the sweat starts to act crazy, and you’re in a hurry for a meeting or an important appointment, you can put the jacket on to feel more comfortable. Bonus tip: If your jacket has pockets, you can put a handkerchief in it to wipe the sweat out of your face or palms.

Avoid drinks that contribute to your body sweating

Alcohol consumption affects the central nervous system, widens blood vessels, which causes the body temperature to increase. To fight off the temperature, our bodies produce more sweat to cool us off.

According to alcohol.org, the mechanism isn’t fully known yet.

With diminished levels of this enzyme, it’s thought that certain toxic metabolic by-products build up in the body and can cause flushing in the skin.

Some people experience less sweating when they are consuming alcoholic beverages. This happens because they feel relaxed and their sympathetic nervous system is calm.

Consider changes to your hyperhidrosis treatments

hyperhidrosis treatment

Different temperatures can produce changes in the way you sweat. Sometimes, colder times like autumn are a time of relief for some people, because their sweating decreases. For others, it can be the exact opposite. There can be no sign of any changes in the sweating level.

Being careful with what you’re wearing and eating will probably not be enough to deal successfully with hyperhidrosis.

As the first step of your anti-sweat mission, you can try using prescribed antiperspirants or over-the-counter antiperspirants. Other types of medications could help to have more control over your sweating.

Usually, at this step, most people find themselves disappointed seeing minimal or no results at all. These medications often aren’t enough to treat this medical condition.

If you’re already using medications, and you see that this effect is wearing off, you should consider researching other options. If you have the opportunity to do so in your area, look for a doctor with experience in hyperhidrosis treatment to advise you about treatment options.

Talk to your doctor about excessive sweating

excessive sweating doctor

Using medications properly is the most important thing when it comes to fighting hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating. If you’re considering adding extra medications to your treatment plan or intensifying the use of the existing ones, you should talk to a doctor specialized in this area. Sometimes, depending on the type of the treatment or medication, you can experience no changes at all. Some medication can cause hyperhidrosis as a side effect.

However, if a person is dealing with other serious conditions, it is necessary for them to continue taking them. In these situations, it’s essential to learn how to manage the increased level of sweat. Hyperhidrosis that is a result of taking medications is known as secondary hyperhidrosis.

The doctor can explain to you the possible benefits and disadvantages of using the medication in general. Also, they can educate you about the particular effect in the time of the year like winter.

Conclusion

Winter symbolizes more relaxed times for most people who are suffering from excessive sweating, but the fight against it continues. It’s easier to hide the sweat stains and feel less ashamed by wearing particular colors and layers. The most important thing is to think up-front so you’re ready at every moment.

Thinking carefully about the colors and layers while dressing is a good tactic to cover up a sweat. However, it won’t help you lessen the sweat level significantly. That’s why it is important to use medications or treatments that can help you take control of your excessive sweating.

Before considering any adjustments to your treatment plan, reach out to your doctor. They can present you with information on certain medications and treatment options.

Living with Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating): The story of Giuseppe Gabriele https://blog.hidroxa.com/en/living-with-hyperhidrosis-giuseppe-gabriele-story/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=living-with-hyperhidrosis-giuseppe-gabriele-story Wed, 02 Dec 2020 09:39:21 +0000 https://blog.hidroxa.com/en/?p=339 A real-life story: Giuseppe Gabriele told us how hyperhidrosis affects his life, and now he has decided to try out our Hidroxa SE 20 iontophoresis machine.

The post Living with Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating): The story of Giuseppe Gabriele appeared first on The Hyperhidrosis Blog.

]]>
Not long ago, Giuseppe Gabriele, a young man from Italy discovered his hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) problem and now opened up about his struggles and how hyperhidrosis affects his life. He tried healing creams and deodorants before but without any results. After several failures, he decided to give a chance to our Hidroxa SE 20 iontophoresis machine.

What happens when sweating takes over your life

Hyperhidrosis (also known as excessive sweating) affects patients’ quality of life, resulting in social and work impairment and emotional distress. This often leads to a negative self-image and fear of people’s reactions. Furthermore, it has a negative effect on the mental health of sufferers, especially its youngest sufferers. They are constantly worried about noticeable sweating. Hyperhidrosis affects their ability to participate in school activities, have fun, pursue a career, engage in relationships, and more.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

– Maya Angelou

However, there are many people out there in the world who are struggling with excessive sweating just like you. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, there are nearly 5% of the world’s population suffers. However, many are too embarrassed to speak up and seek help. They frequently report frustrations or problems with things most people take for granted. This often involves things such as shaking hands or missing out on social gatherings. The condition does interfere with almost every aspect of their lives, from clothing to career choice.

Hyperhidrosis awareness

Hyperhidrosis really doesn’t have the awareness that it should have, considering how many people are living with it. Our aim is to spread hyperhidrosis awareness to help people find more support through sharing their stories so that excessive sweating can be taken seriously and given the research and treatment development it deserves. It is also important to spread the word that there are many treatments available and the symptoms of excessive sweating can be effectively treated.

Living with this condition can make you feel isolated, depressed, confused, and alone, but we want you to know that you are not alone and you are so much more than your diagnosis. It takes a lot of courage to go through life as a sweater and even more to speak about hyperhidrosis.

Giuseppe’s story

Today, through the eyes of a young man Giuseppe Gabriele, here’s a glimpse of the impact hyperhidrosis has on the quality of his life. He is now 19 and discovered this problem 4 years ago.

Hidroxa SE 20 iontophoresis machine for hyperhidrosis treatment
Giuseppe Gabriele using Hidroxa SE 20 iontophoresis machine

1. When did you first realize that your sweating was excessive?

Answer: I realized that my sweating was excessive when, even though we were in the middle of winter, my hands and armpits were always sweaty. Unlike my friends, I often had sweat stains on my T-shirts despite the fact that it was cold, not hot. I often avoided wearing T-shirts or sweaters in bright colors so that others would not notice anything.

2. Which body areas are affected by hyperhidrosis and have you tried any treatments before?

Answer: The areas affected by hyperhidrosis are my hands and armpits. I tried some healing creams and deodorant before, but nothing really seemed to work for me.

3. What is the most challenging thing about living with HhS and how does it affect your life? (interference in daily life, technological issues)?

Answer: Hyperhidrosis interferes with my daily life whether it involves going to the gym and being much sweatier than others, shaking someone’s hand and apologizing for wet or damp hands, going to work, and trying to look always clean and tidy making sure to change my shirts several times.

4. Did you try to hide your sweating and did you develop any of the compensated behaviours (for example, did you avoid certain situations, handshaking, carried handkerchiefs, often changing socks, etc.)?

Answer: I try to hide my sweating especially from people I don’t know. What makes living with hyperhidrosis more difficult is the fear of not always being able to hide this discomfort, the fear that others will judge me badly as if I were dirty and did not take care of myself or they might think that I don’t have perfect hygiene.

5. When did you hear of iontophoresis as a treatment option for excessive sweating?

Answer: I started hearing about hyperhidrosis thanks to my doctor who, after having a question? “Doctor, why do I always have sweaty hands and armpits even if I haven’t exercised and it’s not hot?” He examined me and explained at length what hyperhidrosis is and how it manifests. Then I started researching online about different options and available treatments. It is helpful for me to read various stories of people who have had the same discomfort.

6. Are you sceptical to try iontophoresis and will you update us on your results?

Answer: At first, I was a little skeptical but now I’m ready to change my mind and count on Hidroxa for possible positive changes in my life. I started the treatment a few days ago thanks to my sister who, after various researches, decided to entrust herself to Hidroxa. At the moment, I am working hard to follow instructions on how to achieve the best possible results using an iontophoresis machine. I will keep you informed of the results.

Hyperhidrosis in children

After hearing his story, our goal is to educate people that hyperhidrosis can happen at any age and children are no exception. During childhood and adolescence, we form and develop our personalities. Because of hyperhidrosis, they might come across as shy even though they are really not or they might withhold from answering questions in the classroom because they don’t want to raise their hands to show a sweaty armpit or they overall don’t enjoy too much attention.

“In the long run, hyperhidrosis might change their behaviour and who they are in an unwanted way. In some countries, a patient must wait until they turn 18 before their hyperhidrosis can be treated with botox or iontophoresis. This can be devastating for the individual. These treatments are safe with few adverse effects. Children should be allowed treatment when the sweat starts to have a negative impact on their lives. If that treatment should be aluminium chloride, botox or iontophoresis, is up to them and their doctor to decide. But hyperhidrosis is definitely a paediatric disease and mustn’t be neglected. There is no reason not to help these children.”

Sandra Eriksson Mirkovic, MD.

If excessive sweating is affecting your life too – know that you are NOT alone. And remember, together we can make a difference.

We are trying to reach out to patients suffering from hyperhidrosis, in other countries as well. We know that the access to treatment is poor abroad, as well as in Sweden. Sometimes it can be hard to reach those who need the information because they don’t always know what they are looking for. Not everyone is familiar with iontophoresis as a method of treating hyperhidrosis. We have therefore applied to sell the device via Amazon in hope of reaching more people with the information about hyperhidrosis and iontophoresis.

Yesterday or application was finally approved.

Have you seen the movie Edward Scissohands with Johnny Depp? It is about a man who is “created” by a scientist, a little bit like the creature in “Frankensteins monster”. But the scientist dies before he is able to finish his creation. Edward was temporary made with scissors as hands but now he is stuck with them permanently. This leads up to different kinds of situations and problems which are shown is the movie.

“I feel like Edward Scissorhands”, said a close friend, who previously had been brave enough to share the fact that she suffers from hyperhidrosis of the palms. She then told the story of how limited her life feels and that she almost cant use her hands because of the sweating. The keyborad of the computer gets wet, as well as the paper when she is writing with a pencil. She cant use her smartphone because it is like she has put her hands in water before trying to use the phone. “You avoid physical contact”, she said. “Touching people. Shaking hands, holding the hand of someone you like. Touching your partner during sex. All this, you try to avoid because it feels so uncomfortable to leave everything and everyone you touch soaking wet. Now when I had a baby I even leave him wet when I hold him, because of my hands. Maybe thats okay in the summer”, she continued, “but in the winter he becomes cold fast when he is wet”. It becomes a huge problem. And what if he inherited the condition (hyperhidrosis) from me”? My friend looked worried and there wasnt much to say to comfort her. I know that life with hyperhidrosis can be tricky, in the best case and unbearable in the worst. Luckily, she “only” had hyperhidrosis of the palms. This area of the body, along with the armpits are the boy parts most commonly examined in scientific reports. Since other body parts have not been studied, a lot of doctors and medical personnel say that you cant treat hyperhidrosis of “other” areas.

One usually talks about science as well as proven experience. When studies have not been made in an area but clinical use has shown a results after many years that can be equally important as the result from any study. Hyperhidrosis of other areas than palms and armpits have been treated with for example injection treatments, in some countries, for decades. But it is still common that the effect of treatment effect in these areas is denied. We are trying to spread information about hyperhidrosis and that there are effective treatments even if the hyperhidrosis is located to other body parts than palms and armpits.

No one should have to feel like Edward Scissorhands or let the excessive sweating control their lives. Hyperhidrosis of the palms can be treated with for example antiperspirant deodorants, injection treatments, sometimes with pills or iontophoresis devices (which are what we sell here att Hidroxa). Dont forget to be diagnosed by a doctor before starting a treatment because other causes of excessive sweating need to be excluded.

“I always leave footprints behind me on the floor when I walk barefoot or with socks on”, said one of our friends who suffer from plantar hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating on the feet. She told us that there were always wet marks on the floor behind her, which she found very embarrassing. This makes her, to the greatest extent possible, avoid taking off their shoes when she is among other people, which of course requires a lot of planning. She says she often declines attending social events because of her sweaty feet.

Excessive sweating of the feet, plantar hyperhidrosis, often starts early, during childhood, but can occur at any time in life. Often, but not always, coupled with excessive sweating of the hands.
One problem with sweaty feet (and also armpits) is that, unlike the sweat of many other areas of the body, it often smells bad, increasing the problems for those who suffer from excessively sweaty feet. Many who read this think safely: Yes, but I also have sweaty feet. You just have to take care of your personal hygiene. Yes, most people have some sort of sweaty feet, more or less troublesome, but it i only called hyperhidrosis when the sweating is very intense and for no obvious reason. For example. when you get up in the morning and the sweat immediately start forming droplets or even start running down the feet. This is quite common for a person with hyperhidrosis. Many with excessive foot sweat describe that they always have to wear socks to absorb the sweat and they say it feels like the sweating is more activated when they are barefoot. They say that their shoes get ruined quickly, which becomes a major expense. But toughest of all is of course the social handicap. As with other forms of hyperhidrosis, it can not be cured but it can be treated in various ways. Some, although they are few, say that the use of aluminum chloride for example, Perspirex or Hydrosal helps the. The foot lotion, not the deodorant, is said to be the best for your feet. Some have read on the internet that aluminum chloride can cause cancer, but to our knowledge there are no scientific studies that points to this. And also, these antiperspirant are sold in pharmacies, which would not be the case if they were proven carcinogens. One can treat hyperhidrosis of the feet with Botulinum Toxin Injections. However, it has been shown that in many cases, the duration of the effect when you treat sweaty feet is short compared to other areas. 2 months effect is not uncommon. One should not be treated more frequently than every 3 months as there is a risk that one become immune to the treatment, which means that it then stops working. Iontophoresis is a treatment that helps against excessive sweating of the hands and feet and can be an option when injection treatments are not possible or in order to prolong the effect of the injections. Read more about iontophoresis here. Some feel they are helped by medication such as Oxybutynin but these tablets are often associated with a lot of side effects ranging from dry mouth and constipation to headaches and even confusion. The recommendation for these medications is to avoid daily use and only take the medication when necessary.

As you can read on our website www.hidroxa.com “About us”, we are a small family business founded in 2015. We sell “sweat machines”, or iontophoresis machines with a “fancy” name, on the Internet.

Now you probably think “sweat machine”, what the heck is that? To explain, we need to rewind the tape a little bit and talk about something called hyperhidrosis and why sweat machines are needed at all.

All people, except for a few exceptions, sweat. It is vital to be able to regulate our body temperature. As all other functions in the body, it can sometimes become defect. You may sweat a little, as we’ll write about today, too much. When you suffer from excessive sweating, you suffer from a condition called hyperhidrosis. Between 1-3% of the world population suffers from hyperhidrosis. Many react with laughter, the first time they hear about excessive sweating. Sweating a lot, how problematic can that be? A very big problem, it turns out, if you speak with those who are affected. If you manage to get hold of someone, that is. For even if the disease is very common, the people with hyperhidrosis tend to stay under the radar because they are ashamed. To sweat a lot, maybe also smell bad, that must be because a person does not take care of their personal hygiene, right? Surely they do not shower very often? These are some common reactions, because almost nobody is familiar with hyperhidrosis, not even the healtcare system. When people with hyperhidrosis seek care, they are often misunderstood or questioned. This, of course, reinforces the behavior of hiding their problems.

There is no known cure for hyperhidrosis yet but it can be treated with a variety of methods, for example iontophoresis. We will come back to more details about treatment options in coming posts.

In this blog we will write about everything related to hyperhidrosis, and we hope that the blog can fill the gap of knowledge regarding hyperhidrosis that exists throughout the community and on the Internet today.
